CRYSTAL P!NK PERSUASION

Gretel still hovered patiently in the distance in the same NO PARKING zone they’d landed in. Of course she did; she was on standby. Their walk back had been blessedly free of any type of molestation, annoyance, or hungry salespeople looking for more office supplies.

“I want to apologize.” She reached for his hand. “For getting all riled up in your brain back there in the market.”

“That’s okay. All riled up was phenomenally appropriate.” He gave her hand a squeeze so delicious she tasted the memory of lemon marmalade. “Also, I promised you basic piloting lessons,” he offered. “How about now?”

They still had a ways to go, and even though they weren’t at the ship sitting in front of the control screen, Grace knew Rhodes wouldn’t have picked this time and place if it wasn’t going to work. She also knew it was his way of ensuring she felt safe. Safer. Or at least less riled up. “You’re on, you big delicious E.T.”

He laughed. “We’ll be back to our normal forms soon.” With his spindly alien hands, he gestured toward the distant spacecraft. “So with Gretel, all you have to do is sit in the captain’s chair, tell her where you want to go, and say ‘Autopilot On.’ She’s programmed to respond to whoever’s in that chair.”

Grace’s already big eyes widened even more. “It’s that simple? But what about the user manual in Old Hellenic?”

“Details. Actually, you could even get Gretel to translate it for you if you wanted. But it’s pretty self-explanatory, really.”

“And all this time, I thought you were working pilot magic.”

“I didn’t say I wasn’t.” He grinned, forcing his ET face into a spiral so contorted she laughed aloud. He regained some semblance of seriousness, at least outwardly, as they lumbered down the street, which narrowed the farther they got from the town itself. The ground also got closer and closer. Oh! The illusion was dropping!

“What a relief this is,” Grace admitted. “Although if I kept looking like an alien, I bet I could at least frighten a couple of disbelievers.” The Tall Grey thing might have its uses.

“You could frighten anyone you wanted, no matter how you looked. That hydra persona was all kinds of impressive.”

She blushed with the compliment. “I only did the murder-sphinx thing for a few minutes, and hoo boy, was that tiring.”

“Your brain is a complex place. Remember when we first started brain training?”

“Yeah, like this morning.”

Rhodes let out a small laugh. “I can teach you how to extend those illusions, but it’s still good to take things a little bit at a time. You already made a giant leap with that today.”

They were almost to the ship, finally. “I can wait. As much as I enjoyed taking on the universal embodiment of ‘AAH RUN YOU’RE ABOUT TO BE ABDUCTED BY ALIENS,’ I like being human better.” She gave her pits a hesitant sniff. The scent of fresh ripe cherries wafted up on the Saturnian breeze, infiltrating her nose. Wow, metaphorical much? “I also feel far less fetid.
