Chapter Six

Dean

Rushing towards the clearing as fast as I can, I can already hear the sounds of a fight taking place. The sounds are my guide. Though I know these woods like the back of my hand, I know by the noises that I need to hurry. I have to find Pearl and keep her safe from all of this.

When I got to Pearl’s parent’s house, but she was there. I checked the whole area, seeing the broken window from what I assumed to be her room. It was safe to look around because her parents were gone. When I saw the empty room and window, I knew something must be wrong. I clung to the smallest shred of hope that my mate might be looking for me. That’s why I came racing back here.

The part that worries me is the fact that her parents were gone as well. I hope they are not chasing after her. My gut tells me that they are—the sounds of fighting in the clearing could be a clear indication of that.

I was already on my way back through the forest when I ran into a couple of my friends. I think James sent them, but I’m not sure. Either way, they let me know that everyone, including Pearl, is in the clearing. That just confirms what I had already expected.

As I get closer to the clearing, the sounds of the battle get louder. I see Pearl’s parents there, along with one of the elders. A loud snarl of anger escapes me. I see the elder’s pack of shifters, fighting James, who is giving them a good fight. I look beside him and see that Pearl is fighting along with him. I’m shocked and proud of her. The other shifters are having a hard time matching her speed and strength. Dashing to her side, I join in the fight.

As I take my place by her side and start to bite at the nearest enemy, I feel changes run through my body. I’m stronger and faster than before—energy and power course through me. I know it has to do with Pearl being here with me. I know for a fact that she is my one true mate. That bond makes us stronger than average.

The two of us, along with a little help from James, are able to beat the elders’ pack, and the ones they called in as backup. Some are severely injured, and limp away—the ones who aren’t run off quickly, howling, and whining in defeat.

Soon, the clearing is empty, except for Pearl, her parents, James and myself. We have all shifted back to human form. James is smiling a little but appears slightly out of breath.

I look at Pearl, pull her into my arms, and kiss her. I hug her gently, not wanting to hurt her stomach. She smiles happily at me. I keep one arm around her waist as I look at James. There is something I need to say to him after all of this.
