CHAPTER 10

Ronan

There is nothing better than seeing your purpose in the world come into clear focus. As Naomi returns with me through the caves, I feel honored I found mine.

Her hips sway gently, from side to side, an invitation to spank her silly. Normally, I would never pass up the opportunity. But thinking about the night we just had together makes me feel things I’ve never felt before. It is what humans call ‘love.’

Despite the danger we could’ve faced, we spent the night in the settlements. Naomi showed me what it means to be free. But I can’t count on my brothers to understand.

When we return, I notice that all the furnaces have been powered off, and I see that the metal ore we’ve been storing has been turned into ammunition. In front of the stacks of bullets, my brothers tinker with a bomb-like device. I flick the light switch, but the generator doesn’t seem to be working either. They’re obviously planning a big trip.

Greyson waves a battery. “We had to use the last of the power.”

I hold my breath. “What are you two planning behind my back?”

Targon loads a semi-automatic plasma rifle with grim satisfaction. “The two lovebirds have arrived. How long has it been, Greyson?”

Greyson checks a nonexistent watch. “Let’s see. They spent five hours and fifty-three minutes inside the settlements.”

“Six whole hours,” Targon says.

Naomi bites her lip and ducks behind me.

Targon turns angrily. “I see you’ve given the omega free rein to do whatever she pleases.”

Naomi steps forward, sliding between us before I can push Targon away. “My name is Naomi, not the omega. Whatever I can or can’t do is decided by my master. All I ask from you is that you respect the sanctity of our bond.”

She’s adapting. I’m so proud of her.

Targon frowns. “Right. The sanctity.”

Scowling, Greyson packs the rest of the ore into the bag. “It’s no use arguing with her. Our situation has not changed. The Reapers are on the prowl. We aren’t safe here.”

Thinking about the Reapers causes my nerves to twist until they feel like they might snap. “We don’t live here out of choice. We live here because we have a duty as Guardians,” I say.

“Not anymore,” Greyson says. “Our role as Guardians is over.”

I feel Naomi’s eyes on me. The truth is I don’t want to stay down here forever either. I just don’t see another way.

“I am the leader of this pack,” I growl.

Greyson stands, facing me. His voice vibrating with anger. “I’m not sticking around to see another group of alphas go to waste.”

Targon looks fed up with my leadership. “Enough of this idiocy. If they want to stay and die, let them.”

Greyson glares, nodding furiously. “After what you’ve put us through the last few days, you owe us.”

It hurts to see them so let down. And when I feel Naomi’s hands grip my forearm, my responsibilities as an alpha begin to sink in.

“Ronan, we have a child coming. We have to leave,” she says.

I bite down, hating what I’m hearing.
