CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Since settling into the booster seat for his ride to school, Bradley hadn't stopped talking about wonderful Miss Yvette and how her oatmeal was almost as good as her cookies, which were even better than her pancakes.

Driving his son to school and listening to him chatter on about the things that excited him actually felt close to normal for Nick. Even though this was only the second time he'd taken his son to school, the apprehension of last week was gone, and the comfort of familiarity had taken its place.

"Do you think Mommy would like Miss Yvette?"

"I know your Mommy liked Miss Yvette."

Bradley's eyes lit up. "Mommy knows Miss Yvette?"

Nick wondered how long was normal to refer to your deceased mother in the present tense. "Your Mommy knew Miss Yvette before you were born."

"Really?"

The school came into view ahead, and Nick thought it wasn't soon enough. "Really."

"So, it's okay for me to like Miss Yvette, too?"

Okay, now he was more than glad to pull into the parking lot. Even seeing Brenda Kennedy standing by her car wasn't as frightening as the idea of where this conversation might go. "I think it's very okay to like Miss Yvette."

Stopping the car, Nick slipped the gears into Park and undid his seat belt. Before he could step out of the vehicle, Bradley was unbuckled and opening his door. "I'll pick you up when school's out."

"'K." Without looking back, Bradley ran toward the building.

The kid had to have a shitload of questions. And it was up to Nick to find all the answers. But where?
