Helen

HELEN RUBBED AT the grit in the corners of her eyes and thought longingly about the long, hot shower she intended to take after she checked into her hotel room. She glanced down at her watch. It was almost nine o’clock in the morning. She had fallen asleep around one a.m. somewhere after Cleveland and slept fitfully until six when the bus stopped for thirty minutes in Milesburg, Pennsylvania. She had considered getting off to stretch her legs and breathe something other than the moist, stale air inside the bus, but instead, had tugged her coat more firmly under her chin and fallen back asleep.

Now, three hours later, she felt stiff, her hands and feet uncomfortably bloated. She sniffed, wrinkled her nose, and ran her fingers through her hair. She could tell from the tangles that it must look more than a little disheveled. Her tongue felt thick in her mouth and she moved it around, hoping to generate some saliva. She felt hung over.

She rubbed again at her eyes, yawned, and looked out the window. A thin layer of frost clung to the grass that lined the edge of the highway and as they passed, it glistened in the weak sunlight. They were about two hours outside of New York City and her transfer to the express bus to Boston.

Helen rolled her head gently from side to side and massaged the back of her neck to ease the stiffness. She knew she should check her phone. James had likely tried to contact her, as had David. She could only pretend the situation was anything other than what it was for so long. She rubbed her neck harder, in ever-larger circles.

Just look and get it over with, she thought dully. With a sigh, she pulled her phone from her purse. She had turned it off after her conversation with William and left it off throughout the night. But now, it was time to face the music. She pressed the thin button at the top of the phone. As she waited for it to power up, she sighed, closed her eyes, and pinched almost savagely at the bridge of her nose. She opened them and quickly tapped in the code to unlock the screen. She stared at the alert message. She had thirty-seven new text messages, all from David. She clicked on the first one.
