THERE WAS SINGING OF Happy Birthday and cake eating and special gifts for Aunt Margaret before the celebration wrapped up, and none of it mattered to Kiefer. He was completely distracted by Leela. She and Addison were at Aunt Margaret’s table. He could see Leela look down at her dress and Aunt Margaret, smiling and dismissing the mess Leela was explaining. He could read her. She was self-conscious about it. He knew her, or he was getting to know her in ways that made him wonder what was really going on between them.

Stone’s voice broke through his wondering. “You miss her and she’s just across the room.”

Kiefer gave Stone his attention. “What?”

“You heard me.”

“It’s not...” The word like that got stuck in his throat. What was the point in lying? “I, uh...I don’t know.” He chuckled. “Man, I’ve been working too hard.”

“That’s not it.”

Kiefer continued to try to dismiss what he was feeling, which was a strong attraction. Like he hadn’t had in years. “I mean I haven’t been dating so...”

“Come on, Kiefer. It’s obvious there’s chemistry between you two,” Stone teased. “Plus, you know Ethan can’t hold water. He told me you liked her.”

Kiefer picked up his drink and settled further back in his chair. Stone was happy. He had words of wisdom about relationships that most of the family thought they’d never hear.

“It’s time for you to figure out what she really means to you.”

Kiefer considered Stone’s words. He didn’t have a choice. His cousin wasn’t wrong. “She’s smart and so present...you know what I mean?”

“Yeah,” Stone said. “I know what you mean. Smart and present is sexy. That body isn’t hurting either.”

Kiefer pinned him with a look.

“What?” Stone said. “I’m married, not dead. We all know Addison’s got me locked down like a roped bull, and I’ve never ever been happier, but I see what you see. Leela’s a beautiful woman. It runs in their family.” Stone tossed his napkin on his plate. “Don’t muck it up.”

Stone popped up from his chair and walked away from the table, leaving Kiefer alone and free to return to following Leela around the room with his eyes as she and Addison chatted with people. He should be doing the same, but he was too much of an introvert for that. Besides, it was his family. He’d caught up with everyone during an extended visit before he moved to Forest Hills.

Kiefer couldn’t deny that Stone was right. Leela’s absence left a cold space next to him. He also couldn’t deny the idea of her moving out of his house concerned him. Addison’s suggestion that Leela move cut into his chest. He didn’t want her to leave. He was used to her being there. He liked her being there.

He watched as she moved through the crowd, obviously making her way back to their table. Brad slipped into his mind. Kiefer admired Leela’s strength and resilience.

And as Leela returned to her seat, a determined glint in her eyes, Kiefer knew he couldn’t let her face this challenge alone.
