Ray’s smile was exquisitely male as his dark eyes followed her as she descended the stairs.

“Well?” Amber said softly.

His eyes glowed with appreciation as she slowly whirled for his inspection. The black silk dress lovingly followed the sleek lines of her gently rounded frame. Soft padded shoulders, deep V neckline, a wide black sequined belt secured the overlapping front. The dress moved when she did, stopping just above her knees. She wore black leather pumps with snakeskin toes and heels. A cloud of soft brown curls framed her face and pooled on her shoulders. Diamond and onyx square-cut earrings were her only jewelry.

He crossed the room, arms outstretched. When he finally spoke, he had to get past the constriction in his throat. “Girl, you take my breath away.” He inhaled her sweet scent as he pressed his lips against her cheek, his hungry gaze lingered on her beautiful mouth covered with deep red lipstick. His shaft thickened as if time were not a consideration, and need his only barometer, as he enjoyed her beauty.

A few hours in bed had not eliminated the hunger he had for her. Need continued to mushroom into a deep craving that couldn’t be easily or quickly ignored. They had been apart too long. In spite of the carefully made plans for the gala evening ahead, all he could seem to concentrate on now was how much he wanted to be with her, just the two of them.

The thought of having to leave her pierced him with acute disappointment. This would be the first test of their love. Could she handle the separation? How would she cope with the distance and the danger? Everything was different now, more complex because they had become lovers. Their emotional ties were stronger now than they had been at any time in the past five years.

He still had not been able to tell her that this was their last night for awhile. He had found himself wanting to put it off for as long as he could, wanting only to see her eyes sparkling with happiness exactly as they were now.

Her smile took his breath away and left him reeling from the impact. How could one woman be so perfect for him and yet be so fragile?

“You look very handsome yourself, sir.” She stroked the satin lapels on his black dinner jacket.

Ray’s hard features softened as he grinned boyishly. “Ready?”

He represented all that Amber considered wonderfully male. The very feminine part of herself responded without censor to his very masculine essence. It had nothing to do with the way his suit fit the width of his shoulders or the taut lines of his lean waist and hips or even the hard muscled length of his legs. The stark white shirt and black bow tie only added to his dark raw beauty. He was all man from the top of his thick close-cut natural to the tip of his Italian loafers. No woman in her right mind could resist him, Amber decided.
