Chapter 14

“It’s time to open the gifts!”

Addison sat back in her chair as they all watched Lenise Reid’s best friend, Tracy, pull a vintage wooden wagon to the front of the room. All the bridal shower presents were piled high on it and the sign read: Hitched to Cole’s Wagon.

Such a clever girl, or was it her sister, Sienna’s, idea? She’d have to find out.

It was a small shower. Lenise almost didn’t want to have one because she had so few friends. The woman was honest about the many years she’d been isolated from other people in her troubled marriage to an abusive, but now deceased husband. The local Bennett cousins—Alex, Karyn, Raven, and Avery—were out in full support of the newest sister to their tribe. With the help of Tracy locating a few old friends and church members, and Sienna’s insistence that all the Ingrams be present, she had a nice turnout.

“Please tell me there isn’t some silly game where we make a hat or something,” Lenise said, cringing.

“We’ve played enough games for tonight. I’m going to let you open your things in peace,” Tracy said, handing her the first gift box.

Mrs. Rose and a server entered the room carrying trays with pieces of cake. Each woman took a slice and settled in to watch Lenise open her gifts. Lenise went through one package after the other, removing mostly lingerie, including the gift Rachel had gotten for Addison. There were some “His and Her” items too. Rachel’s gift was a trip to Neiman Marcus to create her own signature perfume. It was the hit of the party. Her conservative, thrifty sister had learned how to spend Zeke’s money like a real pro. Addison was proud of her.

“We have one final gift for you,” Sienna said, picking up a remote control. “It’s from Cole.” The lights were dimmed by Tracy and a video began to play on the large screen television.

Cole came on the screen. “Lenise, babe, it’s been hard keeping this a secret from you. You know we had pictures from the proposal, but surprise, the video I said was ruined, was not. We have this moment forever. I thought it would be nice for you to share it with your friends tonight.”

Lenise squealed with delight. The screen cut to an outside dining setup in front of the Eiffel Tower. White candles and flowers decorated the terrace. Their names, Cole and Lenise, scrolled across the screen. An instrumental version of Stevie Wonder’s song “As” began to play.

The scene cut to various shots of Lenise and Cole at locations in Paris. Then there was one where they exited a limo. Cole was wearing a tuxedo and Lenise was wearing a beautiful gold lame dress.

The words “Shangri-La Resort and Hotel, Paris France” popped onto the screen.

The video cut to them entering the outside dining setup. They admired the view and then Steve Wonder was lowered. A violinist began to play. Cole got down on one knee.

Lenise’s shock was evident in the video as she asked him, “What are you doing?”

“Loving you forever.
