Doctorâs Orders
Jaslyn and I had been dating for a few months. She was almost eight months pregnant, and I should have been in a hurry to make things more permanent with her, but we wanted to make sure that we had a strong foundation. We were good, but Alicia...Alicia was different. I kept communication with her to a minimum. We only discussed the baby. I tried to attend appointments with her, but she was controlling everything. She called me one day and asked me to meet her at the doctorâs office that afternoon because she was having some complications. She said something about gestational diabetes and something serious with her blood pressure. I had promised Jaslyn that we would meet for dinner; I knew I should have probably cancelled, but I also knew that Jaslyn would be pissed. However, my first responsibility was to my children.
I had a plan: I could be there for Alicia and leave in enough time to meet Jaslyn. If I was on time, I would make it to the hospital by three that afternoon and leave by five; I could still meet Jaslyn for dinner by seven. I was pushing it, but I couldnât let Jaslyn down. We were just getting to a place where we were getting along, and we were starting to trust each other again. It was a fragile place, and I knew that even the slightest misstep could destroy it, especially doing anything with Alicia. If I allowed anything to destroy our connection, I would have to start all over again trying to rebuild the relationship, and I just didnât think I had it in me. I was hopeful that one day we could figure out how to get back where we used to be, better than we used to be, but that would surely take some work.
As I left my office for the day, I instructed my secretary to call Jaslyn and move our plans back to 7:30 PM, giving myself some wiggle room. I told her to make reservations at a popular soul food restaurant near downtown Fort Worth. She loved the food, atmosphere, and music. I knew she would be excited because her favorite local band would be playing.
I arrived at the doctorâs office about twenty minutes late because I had a meeting that ran over, and just my luck, I got caught in traffic. I told the receptionist who I was and why I was there. She had a nurse come from the back and escort me to the examination room where Alicia and the doctor were already engaged in conversation. I walked through the door and Alicia greeted me with, âSo you decided to show up?â What could I say? I just nodded my head and took a seat next to her.
âSam, this is my doctor and soror, Lynn Morris. Lynn, this is Sampson Tate. I believe Iâve explained him to you.â
Explain? What was I? An Algebra problem? I knew then that this was going to be a long visit.
