DINNER AT COLE’S HOUSE was a party. There were at least forty people there, including their uncle and aunt and pastor and a few coworkers. Lenise was twenty-three weeks pregnant. Her belly was popped out like a watermelon. She was a gracious host, even inviting Meisha into the kitchen with her for a few minutes to get her away from the crowd. Lenise expressed her sympathy for all Meisha was going through.

Meisha noticed that no one in the room seemed surprised she was with Jackson. No one gave her a second glance like she was some paid escort. It was an easy crowd. The Ingrams were sweet. They always had that reputation and always presented themselves that way.

Sienna Ingram cornered her after dinner and said, “I know Jackson is your boss, but he likes you.”

“I think he feels sorry for me. I’m staying at his house because of security.”

Sienna smiled and shook her head. “You can’t be that naïve. I saw you two dancing at the wedding. He’s not thinking like a boss. Not the kind at the job anyway.” She laughed. “Reel him in, girl. You’ll be the next one lying on the beach under the stars in Maldives.”

Meisha was determined to keep Jackson out of her mouth. Instead, she focused on the tail end of the conversation. “Is that where they’re honeymooning?”

“Yes,” Sienna said. “Can you imagine? Addison loves it. She’s thinking about buying a hut over the water or something.”

Meisha took another sip of her drink.

Sienna added, “You know, Jackson is a nice catch. I personally have had all I can stand of the Bennetts.” She waved a tired hand. “Look at my sisters. Caught. One at a time. All they can do is hire me for a party. I require a rich man from another bloodline for marriage.”

“Does he have to be rich?” Meisha asked.

“Oh, most definitely. What’s the point of being in Forest Hills and marrying someone broke?”

Meisha pinched her lips together. She thought love might be a better reason, but to each his own.

Jackson joined them and Sienna walked away. He was just in time to save Meisha from having to listen to anymore of Sienna’s talk.

“You okay?” he asked. “You looked like you could use a rescue.”

Meisha shook her head. “Sienna’s interesting.”

Jackson laughed. “Oh yes. She’s harmless though.”

“I got that sense.”

“They’ll cut the cake soon and then we can leave,” Jackson said. “I think Robin went to get it. I need to talk to Ethan about something.”

Meisha shoo’ed him. “Go. I’m fine.”

He smiled at her and walked away.

Meisha was holding her own, people watching, when Delaney walked in.

Lenise had been sitting, but she pushed herself off the chair. Meisha had a feeling she hadn’t been expecting her.

Meisha knew the moment Jackson saw her. His face tensed, and he went from being relaxed to not so relaxed. She lived in Charleston. Meisha wondered why she was still here.

“Happy Birthday” was sung and the cake was served and she and Jackson enjoyed it from a pair of wing chairs in the corner of the room.
