In an instant, Harax’s entire demeanor changes. He growls, a rough sound deep in his throat, and his voice sounds strange as he tries to speak, his voice choked in his throat as he pushes himself up off the furs.

My heart lurches with renewed fear.

Is he going to attack me? Was I wrong about him all along?

I thought I could trust him. I believed him just now, but he’s an alien.

Harax jerks upward, his eyes glassy and his movements awkward, and he turns his head slowly toward me.

“Engari,” he slurs thickly. “Druggedddd—”

Shit. I realize with a flash what he’s trying to tell me, why he’s behaving so strangely. The other aliens must have drugged him, probably because they want me. After all, if those first pirates bothered taking all of us, women from Earth must be valuable. And clearly, these aliens trade.

Just as the realization hits me, the flap of the hut opens, and I turn sharply to see several of the Engari tribesmen bursting in. They make a beeline for our bed, reaching out to grab me, but Harax lunges past me. Despite his drugged state and uncoordinated movements, he lashes out with a fury I wouldn’t have thought someone in his state would be capable of, swinging and kicking as he bodily shoves them backward away from me.

It occurs to me that I could just run. But I can’t bring myself to leave him. He’s tried to protect me all this time—I now know, if I believe him, that he took me from the Uleki to prevent me being traded in the first place. He’s been good to me, and it feels wrong to abandon him somehow.

“Go!” Harax slurs as he knocks another of the Engari warriors to the ground, fighting with a wild, uncoordinated ferocity. “Need—get—out—here—”

I run to his side as he knocks down the remaining two warriors, helping support him with his arm across my shoulders as we clumsily run for the exit. It’s ridiculous to think that I could manage to help a seven-foot-tall, musclebound alien in any capacity, but somehow the two of us clinging to each other keeps him upright as we try to make our way back to where Harax left the cat-horse.

As we run I can feel him getting worse, stumbling, nearly falling unconscious.

“Just a little farther!” I shout through gritted teeth. “Come on, we’re almost there!”

He groans, but we make it to his mount, and I try to help push him as he weakly clambers aboard the cat-horse. There’s very little I can do to help him. He’s two to three times my size and so much heavier, but I do my best anyway, my heart pounding as I look over my shoulder to see if we’re being pursued. I see torches lighting as more warriors pour out, and a cold fear grips me.

“Fuck!” I grind out. “Come on, Harax! You can do it!”

He hauls himself atop the animal, flopping weakly over its back as I throw myself atop it,
