Maggie looked at everyone seated around the table in the Command Center’s meeting room; Kor, Ty, and Lacy sat at one end, she and Rex were in the middle, and, at the far end, were Jahivir and Lukas, who had quickly become the unofficial leader of the plane’s passengers.

“We’re here today because we need to discuss finding a temporary home for the Earthers.” Kor began. “General De’Ryke and the Arathian High Council has ordered us to find a suitable planet on this side of the galaxy, where the Lazools will remain unaware of their presence. We have the sensor capabilities to find and explore these planets; what we don’t have is the time for us to travel to each one to find the most suitable.”

“Since you’re not as familiar with this area of the galaxy, why don’t you ask the locals for help?” Lacy suggested. “The Grays probably know these sectors of space better than any other race. It wouldn’t hurt to ask them for a suggestion.”

“I think that’s a great idea.” Kor praised. He inputted commands into his console and within moments, Captain Elom was on the screen and Maggie was looking at her second alien species.

Unlike the Arathians, the Grays looked very different than the people of Earth. Elom had a large head with black almond-shaped eyes that took up most of his skull. His nose and mouth were disproportionally small, and Maggie didn’t see any ears sticking out from his head. She couldn’t see much of his body, but even seated in his chair she could tell that his frame was much smaller than her own.

I guess all those people who claim to have seen gray aliens were right, she thought. He looked just like the drawings of the little-gray-men she’d seen since childhood.

“What can I do for you, Captain Kor’ijak?” Elom asked in a melodic voice.

Kor answered. “Captain, as you may know, we recently rescued an airplane above Earth, saving nearly two-hundred individuals, but now we have the problem of finding them a safe home. We, of course, will not take them back to Earth, but neither can we transport them to Arath since we have entered a period of conflict with the Lazools. We were hoping your people could suggest a suitable planet in a close-by sector.”

Elom sat quietly for a moment. “Our research ships saw your ship rescue the Earthers, so we anticipated your dilemma. Fortunately for you, our High Council had decided to allow you to take them to Aeonas, where we have an established colony of Earthers.”

Say what? Everyone around the table looked at each other in confusion.

“You’re saying that there are Earthers already living in another sector of space?” Rex asked to clarify.

Elom was, as always, calm as he explained. “Yes. This is not the first time an Earther vessel has been drawn into the wormhole. We experienced a few unanticipated consequences ourselves, several decades ago, as Earthers developed more advanced, and consequence-prone means of transportation, but we have, since, corrected our errors.
