Chapter 12 — Tor

The East is a land of flat dense jungle, a tangle of lush greens. The cities here are small and few between, and it took many years for my father to conquer the Grytons who live here because of their ability to disappear into the trees. But conquer them he finally did, and peace has reigned for the whole of my lifetime. It is a shock to see the huge cannons lining the thin strips of shore and the military crafts that patrol both the waters and the sky, as well as great craters where bombs have blown away the forest and only brown earth remains.

My father’s troops have withdrawn for the time being while the peace talks take place and so all these belong to the governor and his rebels.

As we draw closer, a fierce voice spits through our radio, demanding to know who we are and our intentions and Strax gives the codeword agreed. We can’t reveal our names — we don’t know who could be listening. The voice greets us and Strax once again takes over control of the vessel, guided by the instructions of the rebel Gryton.

Quickly we pass over the fortified beaches and into the dense jungle and only then do we see the city of Hexa, tucked among the trees that are as tall as the towers of this city. On the very edge of the city is the governor’s compound with its high walls, built once to protect its occupant from any local uprising but now acting as a defence against my father.

We skim over the walls of the city, scuffed and marked by the fierce fighting, but once inside I am surprised to see very little damage to the city itself.

The ship lands at the dock and six eastern Gryton fighters greet us as we emerge from our ship, our limbs stiff but all four of us alert, our fingers ready for triggers and the hilts of spears if necessary. The tall, lean Alphas have the vibrant red hair of the eastern Grytons and wear their green uniforms. It is easy to see how they can camouflage themselves seamlessly in the dense undergrowth, even the colour of their hair a perfect match to the red flowers and berries that litter the jungle floor.

I greet them in the usual manner and they return it with some obvious reluctance and suspicion. Then without another word they form a tight circle around our group and the leader motions for us to follow him into the compound and through to another hall. This one is bare and simple and a quarter the size of the one in the capital but it is clearly the place in which the governor receives his visitors.

Unlike my father the governor has no throne. He waits for us near the entrance flanked on one side by an older Omega and on the other a younger.

The aroma of Omega scent is almost pungent and I see now why the Eastern Gryton drew bandanas over their mouths and noses as they entered the hall.
