Chapter Sixteen

“You have a surprise for me? I love surprises. Where’re we going?” I had to admit I’d tired of eating in. Going to a restaurant once or twice a week would improve my mental health.

“Sain, Teeka, join?”

“Of course, I’d love them to have them as lunch companions. Go ahead and make the arrangements. I’ll work here until it’s time.” I glanced at the pile of paperwork on my desk.

“Time to go,” replied Cara.

No time for office work, then. I wasn’t terribly disappointed. “Okay. Let me pack my bag, and then I’m ready.” My day pack carried all the items I might need on any trip away from the office, such as water and nutrition bars. A few needed to be constantly replaced. Excited about going out for a meal, I told myself to have Cara arrange lunch out as a regular event.

Cara led Sain, Teeka, and me up to the roof. Using a helicopter as a taxi instead of a land vehicle still seemed strange, but I’d happily adjusted. From what I’d noticed, so had Sain and Teeka.

A restaurant situated on a portion of Ooby’s shoreline turned out to be our destination. The facility overlooked a bay filled with fish farm pyramids.

The noonday sun glinting on the fish troughs which created the pyramid shape at first blinded me. However, once my eyes adjusted, the pyramids combined with the fishing boats anchored alongside created a wondrous texture contrasting with the villages visible on the nearest islands—an efficient use of available resources.

The four of us entered the eatery through a back door and then traversed the noisy kitchen to our table out front.

Apparently, Cara had previously spoken with the restaurant manager. Presented with special paper menus with a section for humans and one for Irions, I assumed Cara received the facility’s regular menu. The texture of the menu appeared different from human paper. Particlan paper making, although a suitable topic for Hart, greatly interested me.

They were half a dozen items listed for humans and also for Irions, so the chef had been suitably educated. The human portion contained my favorite.

“Cara, how did the restaurant know what to put on the menu? I mean, here I am on Particle, and they offer me spaghetti and meat balls. How wonderful is that?” I had my suspicions.

She smiled and reluctantly offered, “Suggestions to chef. Table to reserve. Service to provide.”

“Well, then how did the restaurant’s chef know how to cook human and Irion food?”

A serious look plastered Cara’s face. Then she smiled and waved her hand. Sweety rushed through the kitchen door and ran over and gave me a hug.

“Surprise!” Sweety gave everyone a big grin.

I always loved encountering a delighted Sweety. “Aren’t you secretive? I’m so glad you found time to run over here and educate the chef. What about adding a cooking show to your media madness? Chefs all over Ooby and Particle, for that matter, would then be prepared for off-world guests.” I glanced at Sweety. “I think I’m giving you too much to do.
