Chapter 18
The following day, Sarah and Kealen stayed mostly in their quarters. Kealen had told her that he could do his work from there. Sarah assumed he stayed with her because he wanted to keep an eye on her, but whatever the reason might be, she enjoyed spending time with him. It felt like they were back in the cargo hold.
That evening, he was going to transfer the command of the Magnetar over to Torak, so he had to do some last-minute paperwork. When she wasn’t ogling Kealen—he looked so hot when he was concentrating, like a strict schoolmaster, a sexy schoolmaster—Sarah was reading documents and preparing for the responsibilities that lay on her shoulders. She wondered if she could ever pull it off. She wasn’t a diplomat. If this went south and the treaty was canceled because of something stupid she did or said, she would never forgive herself.
The voice of the computer startled her. “One hour until the ceremony.”
Kealen put his datapad down. “Let’s get ready.”
One hour later, she and Kealen stood in the mess hall, surrounded by all the crew. Kealen wore his formal uniform, the same one he had worn at their bonding ceremony. The sight of him made her drool. That uniform is definitely coming with us, Sarah thought.
The ceremony was over before she knew it. Kealen was no longer commander of the battleship Magnetar. Even though his face was a blank slate, Sarah knew that Kealen was affected. She could read it in his eyes.
It was apparent how much his crew respected him. No, it went deeper than respect. His men were ready to go to hell and back for him, to die for him. They were his family, his brothers. And no one said it, but Sarah knew everyone thought it: because of her, a mere human, Kealen had to leave his ship, his home, his family. Sarah felt burdened. The knowledge that she herself had been forced into practically the same situation didn’t lessen the feelings of guilt. Hopefully, this arrangement would work. Hopefully, she wouldn’t screw this up.
