“What if we used me as bait?”

If I whipped my head around any faster, I would have surely broken my neck. Alyssa stood there with so much confidence, calmly suggesting I put her in harm’s way. I knew I was good in bed, but I didn’t think I was good enough to kill a woman’s brain cells.

“Surely you’re joking,” I said, perhaps with a bit more condescension than necessary. Alyssa looked genuinely taken aback by my words. As if I would happily agree to use the woman I’d grown attached to as bait.

“N-no! No, I’m not joking! It makes sense, doesn’t it? They tried to get into the casino through me once before, right? Why not do it again? Make it seem like I’m some silly human who doesn’t take her job seriously. Play into their prejudices about us. Then when we have them where we want them…” Alyssa punched the palm of her other hand with a wide grin. “Bam! We descend on them and end all this!”

I looked her up and down, trying to gauge how committed she was to this so-called plan. It sounded ridiculous, dangerous, and absolutely moronic. And I thought she was smarter than most humans.

Alyssa’s hands gripped her hips, which were cocked to the side in a show of haughty defiance. She looked up at me with her chin pointing out and her lips in a tight smirk, radiating pride.

She was dead serious.

I needed to pick my next words carefully. She obviously didn’t know about the imminent threat these criminals posed to her. And why would she? I made sure not to inform her. I couldn’t fault her for that. But I did need her to understand that it was a bad idea regardless and do so without hurting her pride too much.

Humans can have such fragile egos.

“I appreciate your commitment to this case,” I told her smoothly. “But as I’ve said before, you need to leave this matter to me.” I turned my chair back to the monitors showing real-time footage of the casino floor, as well as network activity and the traffic coming on and off our servers. Nothing had happened yet.

From the corner of my eye, I saw Alyssa’s hands ball into fists. I sighed. Why didn’t I pair with one of those wilting flower human women like they had in the daytime holo shows? The ones that fell over at the first sign of authority. No, I just had to get in bed with one who was stubborn and had something to prove.

I suppose that was just my nature. But it was very inconvenient at the moment.

“You’re upset,” I said, not wishing to prolong the confrontation.

“Of course, I am! I may not be in charge around here, but I’m still part of the team. Indentured servant or not, I work here, and I care about what happens to this casino, okay? My job is on the line, and I have a pretty good one right now, mind you. If it’s
