SOLUTION TO PROBLEM #17
x = the smaller number
The larger number is four times the smaller number. It follows that:
4x = the larger number
The product equals 324. Multiply the two numbers together.
(x)(4x) = 324
Recall that a variable times itself equals the variable squared: xx = x2.
4x2 = 324
Divide both sides of the equation by 4.
x2 = 324/4
x2 = 81
Squareroot both sides of the equation.
