Similarity of Shapes

Two shapes are similar if one is a magnification of the other by some factor. For example, here are two similar triangles:

The right triangle is obtained from the left one by magnification by 2. The two triangles are similar.

A “polygon” is a closed shape formed from straight segments — for example a triangle is a polygon.

In two similar polygons not only the ratios between the sides are the same. This is true for all parts, like diagonals. And importantly — the angles are the same. Magnifying does not change angles.

Look for example at the following two similar quadrangles. They share the same angles.
