Chapter 18: Rebekah

I woke up in the bedroom in Alec’s apartment. It was dark and quiet, and it took me a moment to recall what had happened.

Our moment in Lamplight…

My skin tingled when I remembered his strong, dominant touch, how his fingers left a trail of heat in their wake, how they made me want more and more and—

He is a vampire. A predator. You can trust him as much as you can trust a rabid wolf.

Tears came at the realization. I sat up, leaning against the headboard, as I cradled my face.

Can he even feel? Does he have a heart? Does it beat?

God, I’d been such a fool. What had I expected? That the man who came and swept me up and out of my torturous existence would be a good man? That a dashing billionaire with all the money in the world would be interested in me for anything else than to use and discard me?

What an idiot…

I should have known—handsome princes only come riding in on their white steeds to sweep servant girls off their feet in fairy tales. I was not Cinderella… and Alec was not a dashing prince. He was a beast, a blood-drinker, a murderer, a leech that had lived for centuries on the blood of innocents.

I was lucky to still be alive.

The tears slowed, and I frowned.

Why do I still live?

If he wanted to feed on me, he could have done so on many occasions. We had been together for more than a week, and it would have been a matter of sneaking into my room at night and taking what he wanted…

It shamed me that the thought excited me, but I pushed it away.

There had to be some truth to his story. If I was just… fodder, he would have treated me differently. Perhaps there was going to be a celebration that he needed me for. For a reason beyond me, he’d wanted me to accompany him. He’d said it was because no one would know me, and maybe that held truth.

But what would happen after the celebration?

He’d said I would be free to leave. But I doubted a vampire would let anyone who knew their secret go. If they were in the habit of doing that, the existence of vampires would be common knowledge.

He’s not going to let me go.

He can’t.

Fear gripped my heart. If that was true, then I had until the celebration. He’d do away with me after that… suck me dry for his pleasure and leave me somewhere.

Or will he… turn me?

The thought excited me. The idea of being like him, being a powerful creature that took anything it wanted, appealed to me. I saw myself in his arms, sharing a love eternal, the entire world nothing more than a playground, with no death coming close to us, no poverty, no grief or sorrow.

Only love everlasting.

I shook my head.

No… not love… lust and hunger.

I bit back the tears until a deep shuddering breath ended my spell of self-pity. I had to think of Liza.
