Chapter 10

Alden put the children to bed, but his head was too full of thoughts and worries to sleep, so he crept back downstairs to find Polly and George seated at the table drinking coffee.

“I’m sorry,” Alden apologized. “I didn’t mean to disturb you.”

“You’re not disturbing us,” George said. “Sit down and tell us what’s going on with those little ones. We’ve had a few worries of our own recent like, and we know how it can steal a body’s sleep.”

Alden nodded, grateful for the understanding.

“Coffee?” Polly Esther asked.

“Thank you, kindly,” Alden smiled.

Alden took a seat, thanked Polly for the coffee and studied the cup in his hands. “The Sheriff still hasn’t heard anything yet, and I haven’t received a telegraph from back at the ranch yet either. I’m starting to worry that those children might truly be on their own.”

“For the moment they have you,” Polly said softly. “That counts for a lot.”

“But what if no one comes for them?” Alden ran his hands through his hair, his coffee still untouched. “What happens to them, then?”

“I don’t know, “George offered his dark eyes concerned. “One thing I do know, though, is that we can all pray about it and trust that what’s to be will be.”

Alden nodded, lifting his mug and taking a sip. “I guess there’s no use borrowing trouble,” he said.

“Are you impatient to be on your way?” Polly Esther’s blue eyes were bright and piercing.

“No,” Alden said, his words slow. “As I think about it, I’m not. It’s been my plan for years now to get to Yellowstone, but,” he stopped thinking. “But those children, what they’ve been through, it takes all my impatience away. They need me.”

“You came along just at the right time,” George agreed, nodding. “Sometimes things happen for reasons we can’t understand, but this time I think it could all have a happy ending.” He cast his dark eyes at his wife, who offered a sad smile.

“We’re waiting for our son to arrive soon,” Polly said. “His wife passed suddenly this winter.”

“There are many sorrows in this world,” George said, taking Polly’s hand. “Them what can accept them and move on will do the best by God’s grace.”

Alden couldn’t agree more. There were terrible things in this world, things that didn’t seem to be able to exist, but if you held to the Almighty, He would see you through.

“Mr. Quaide,” Polly turned back to him, offering a bright smile. “Why don’t you bring the children to church tomorrow? There’s a class for the little ones, and it might be good for them to be around others.”

“I think that’s a fine idea.” Alden sipped his coffee again. “You don’t think they’ll be afraid?”

“If they get worried, Sara or one of the others that look after them will bring them out to you. It’s never any trouble.”

Alden could see the grin on the older man’s face and knew that he enjoyed seeing the children. Biders Clump was small, but a busy town, and Alden had seen the schoolhouse at the end of the street.
