As the date approached, I considered just letting it pass without acknowledging it. March eleventh was our original anniversary, and after Dakota tried celebrating our latest first-month anniversary and failing, I hesitated to make it a thing. Dakota hadn’t mentioned it, and maybe she hadn’t thought about it—but it was in the forefront of my mind.

Despite weeks being holed up in the office, hours and hours of studying materials, and meeting with senior accountants about how to manage my bigger clients, I still determined the day couldn’t go by without celebrating.

I had little time to make big plans, but I had a few things in mind. The actual day was in the middle of the week and pulling out the stops on a Wednesday would prove challenging. I was doing the most, a visit to campus was required, and I only had a slim window to get there after work or I wouldn’t have our meal for the night ready.

Because we were still in college for our first-year anniversary, and both of us were broke, we visited the cafeteria and had fried chicken and a bag of chips. I’ll never forget finding a corner table for us to sit at and eat while we talked about how we’d spend our summer. Afterwards we watched this documentary on the lawn because we didn’t have the funds to go to the actual movie theater. I found that movie on the internet and planned to play it too.

I was leaving campus with the food, when I called her and asked, “Hey, I’m off early tonight, can you come over?” When she didn’t hesitate I corrected, “Actually, give me about an hour.”

Then she argued, “An hour? But I thought you were off already?”

“Right,” I told her, but couldn’t explain that I was still thirty minutes from my place and had one more stop to make before I got there. Then I’d have to get everything set up. “Just give me an hour,” I repeated.

“Okay,” she huffed, “I’ll see you in an hour.” Before she hung up she asked, “Should I bring food?”

“Nope, I got it.” I headed to the grocery store to grab her favorite drink and flowers. The flowers were a new addition to the celebration, but I had to outdo college me, at least a little.

I rushed up the stairs and re-arranged the living room. Pulling a blanket from the closet, I laid it across the floor. The movie was ready to play, and the chicken was transferred to plates on the table in front of the television. When I heard a gentle tap at the door I went over, opening it wide with a smile just as big. “Happy to see me?” Her smile matched mine as she flung her arms open.

Then I guess she caught a glimpse of the living room because she asked, “What happened to your furniture?”

I took her purse and her jacket to put it away in the closet before I reached for her hand. I didn’t respond until we were near the blanket.
