CHAPTER FIVE

Even though the drive was only twenty-five miles, it felt like an eternity. Kai’s arm draped across the back of the seat, and despite his previous insistence that they keep their hands to themselves, he continually brushed her neck with his fingertips.

Wow,” she said, trying to divert herself from the erotic thoughts swirling through her head. “I never get tired of that view.”

“Mmmm,” Kai said, turning his attention to the mountains rising to their left. “Nice to look at. Not great to fly through.”

“Really? Why?”

“Windy, turbulent, and there’s a homestead of eagle shifters who try and take out anybody trespassing in their airspace.”

“Eagle shifters? I’ve never heard of Eagle shifters living inside the mountain pass. Who are they?”

“A bunch of inbred d-bags who have very little contact with the outside world. From what I’ve seen, they’d rather shoot you, than talk to you.”

“Nice.” Haven shook her head. “I’ll never look at that view the same way.”

“Sorry.” He adjusted in the seat, stretching his legs in front of him and crossing his arms over his chest. “Just because I’ve had a couple of bad run-ins with them doesn’t mean you should stop admiring the view.”

“Right.” She glanced at him and smirked. “I mean, why would the fact that a clan of dangerous Alaskan bush people bent on killing anybody who innocently wanders into their perceived space skew my opinion?”

Laughter snorted from him. “Well, when you say it like that, I see your point.”

Her heart did a little flip. It was so easy to joke with him. It always had been. Since they were kids, they’d been friends, playing hide and seek, running on the paths outside of town, and swimming in the icy lake near her pack’s community. He’d always been in her life, and she couldn’t imagine that ending.

She swallowed down the nerves battling for space with the butterflies in her stomach and refocused on the road. Everything would be okay. It had to be.

Before she knew it, they were pulling into the Silver Rifle Lodge.

The place had been around as long as she could remember and sat at the top of the hill, overlooking the Matanuska Glacier. Her heartbeat ramped up. The decision to grab Kai and come to the glacier had been impulsive. Yes, they’d kissed and flirted, but now faced with actually getting a room, the decision to hook up felt bigger, less casual than she wanted.

Maybe it was because everything right now felt more serious. Still, she worried. Had she pushed him into this, not given him an out? She slid a sideways glance at him. No, he wanted this as much as she did. If Kai had been against being friends with benefits, he would have said so.

Pushing her worry aside, she pulled into a spot near the front steps and shut off the engine. For several long seconds, she sat staring at the front door of the lodge.

“Are you all right?” he asked, interrupting her spiraling thought process.

“Yeah.” She turned in her seat to face him.
