Chapter 39

I n the past – Alante and Tamara

This wasn’t the life Tamara expected but it was the life she’d been given. No, this was the life she’d taken. After spending her entire time in college being on and off again with Alante, she’d finally gotten what she wanted – marriage – but it wasn’t in the way she thought it would be. She’d been back home in Memphis for a year, and for a year, she did her thing while Alante did his. They hadn’t crossed each other’s paths until Tamara attended Blue and Messiah’s Christmas party.

An evening of catching up led to a night of sex, and that sex led to a baby that neither Tamara or Alante wanted. Well, Tamara wanted the baby, but not like this. And not with Alante. Not while he didn’t want it or love with her. Still, both were prepared to do what they had to do for their child. In Tamara’s mind, their child deserved the happy, loving childhood she’d experienced. In Alante’s mind, him doing right by Tamara and their child would show his father that he wasn’t as selfish and reckless as everyone thought he was.

With Crip’s retirement just a month away, Alante was sure his marriage and child would show him as responsible and mature in his father’s eyes. It was Alante’s idea to elope… to marry as quickly as they possibly could… but his entire mind frame changed a week later when Tamara miscarried.

The marriage that he saw as his way into his father’s position had become a trap. An inconvenience. Without the baby, there was no point in them being together, but he couldn’t very well divorce her. No, that would prove that his father was right about him. That would prove that he was selfish. And reckless. And greedy. And inconsiderate.

There was only one option in Alante’s mind – to remain married and devoted to Tamara. Baby or not.

The marriage that Tamara saw as her way of finally having the love and happiness her parents shared had become a nightmare. A failure. A box filled with rejection. This man didn’t love her; he only loved the idea of the life he thought he could have with her. One filled with power, control, money, status… as if he didn’t already have enough of those things.

There was only one option in Tamara’s mind – to divorce Alante as quickly as possible and thank God for showing her the error of her ways before it was too late.

“Tam…” “Alante…” They both called at the same time.

Tamara laughed quietly and gave Alante the floor to speak.

“I apologize for the way I blew up on you earlier. That was uncalled for. You needed me, and I was only focused on my feelings instead of taking into consideration how losing the baby made you feel. For that, I apologize.” With a nod, Tamara accepted softly. “I know that we only got married because you were pregnant, but you’re really the only woman I’ve ever loved and cared about.
