Satisfied that Moscow’s apartment yielded no more surprise secrets, they made it back to her place. Aiden stepped outside on the deck and called Corbin. When his sleepy voice answered, Aiden smiled and said, “Twenty-four hours a day.”

“Yeah, I’m here.” Corbin yawned. “What’s up?” When Aiden filled Corbin in about what they’d found, Corbin became wide awake in a jolt. “Blackmail money, as in, how much money?”

“Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Aiden replied, “if the blackmail folders hold true. I don’t know how this money gets divided in a state like Nevada, but Toby seems to stand to gain a lot of money.”

“Which won’t make her look very credible either.”

“I know. Every time we find something that shows Moscow to be a piece of shit, it also shows that she had a lot more motives for killing him.”

“Right,” Corbin agreed. “Sucks to be her at the moment.”

“And yet I don’t think she had anything to do with that.”

“No, I don’t either,” Corbin confirmed. “Oh, by the way. We traced the two keys. One to a safe deposit box in a big bank nearby and the other to one of the storage lots, also in Vegas. My vote is that they are both full of money. I didn’t want to pull you guys off Toby alibi duty, so I’ve asked a local retired navy guy I trust to fill in for us here. He’ll let me know what he finds. But again, instead of getting proof that she’s innocent, we keep finding more things that the cops could use to show that she isn’t.”

“I also have a Smith & Wesson that we found in Moscow’s closet, and I want a contact in the Vegas police I can take this gun to who’s honest. She’s been charged with murder, and anything that she does will make it look worse to those dirty cops.”

“You’re right,” Corbin agreed. “Let me think about that, and I’ll call you back.”

Aiden got off the phone and sat down on the chair outside.

Almost immediately Toby stepped out, looked at him, and asked, “Is it safe to come outside?”

He looked at her and nodded. “Yes, of course.”

“I heard you on the phone and didn’t want to interrupt,” she added.

“I asked my boss for somebody honest at this station to turn in the gun to.”

“Oh, that’d be interesting,” she said, with a smile. “You know that all this just gives them more motivation for thinking that I did this.”

“Of course it does when they are focused on only you,” he noted. “Makes me wonder if your husband didn’t plan for you to look guilty, should he die under suspicious circumstances.”

“And you know something? He was just enough of a shit to have done something like that,” she admitted, “but I don’t know. … That picture of me on the wall? It gives me a completely different view of him.”

“Yet it doesn’t endear you more to him?”

“Hell no,” she repeated flatly. “He’s still the asshole who held that gun to my head and beat the crap out of me and terrorized Michelle.
