âYou, Captain,â Silas Cayne proclaimed, âare a sight for sore eyes. A painful one.â
The red-headed officer descending the gangplank to the dock grinned at him. âCayne the Hero, as I live and breathe, I can see that you still do both. Should I curtsey in the presence of greatness?â
Silas chuckled and said, âNo, I think seeing you in a dress the one time was enough.â
The newcomer leveled a stormy glare at him. âI keep telling ye, ye daft git, itâs a kilt! A worthy garment representative of the honor of Clan McKoll.â
Silas pointed at him. âYou know, most families choose swords or flags or something. Not scratchy skirts.â
âYe complain,â Captain âMikeâ McKoll said, âBut the tartanâll be the standard dress uniform soon enough. So Iâd get used to it.â
McKoll offered his hand and Silas slapped his into it. âCripping good to see you, Mike. This place is hurting for real soldiers.â
âClearly, if yeâre in charge of it,â McKoll said, glancing around the docks.
Cayne crossed his arms. âSo, what are you doing here? Thereâs no way a runner got to you in time for you to muster and sail over.â
McKollâs expression darkened. âAye, well, a runner did get to us, and thatâs why Iâm here.â
Cayne realized immediately that Colonel Mayhue must have reached the garrisons on the east end of the Graveyard.
âAh,â he said, and offered out his wrists gamely. âWell, then, I guess youâll be needing these, wonât you?â
McKoll waved a hand. âPut those away, Cayne. Thereâs no one this side of Bel Farak that thinks yeâve got yellow in ye. Particularly when a commanding officer â a colonel, no less â shows up, raving aboot undead and incompetence. They needed someone to come investigate. They sent me.â
The highlander looked Cayne up and down. âInvestigationâs complete. Yeâre charged with being daft and loyal to the King.â
Silas squinted. âArenât those the same thing?â
McKoll chuckled and slapped him on the shoulder. âYe said it, not me.â
Men pounded down the gangplank after their officer, with sergeants bawling orders behind them. Silas glanced past McKollâs shoulder and raised an eyebrow. âExactly how many soldiers did you bring to arrest me?â
McKoll grinned at him. âDonât sell yerself short, laddie. Yeâre Capân Silas Cayne of Beaufort. I toldâem Iâd need no fewer than two hundred of Samothraceâs finest to nail you down. So here we are.â
Cayne sucked in a deep breath and slowly let it out. âTwo hundred?â he repeated weakly. Tears stung his eyes and he could feel his throat closing. By the fething Throne, we might make it through this.
McKollâs face got a little redder himself, and he leaned closer. âIâve got yer back, Silas,â he said hoarsely. âYe know I do.â
He backed off and cleared his throat. âAch. My allergies are flaring up.â
âCaptain Cayne!â
Silas turned to see a Tunn soldier running up to him, baby face flushed with exertion. The soldier snapped a quick salute, which Silas returned. âWhat is it?â
âItâs the Sheolin, sir. Theyâre back. Scouts are reporting hundreds of them.â
Silas sighed, his shoulders slumping.
