Notes

1. Initially there were two neighbouring towns, Doberlug and Kirchhain. They merged in 1950.

2. Neubrandenburg is an ancient city west of Berlin on the shore of Lake Tollense.

3. People who have not lived under a totalitarian regime do not confront, and therefore fully comprehend, the compromises which must be made to sustain a career. In the 1930s, thousands joined the Nazi Party because it was the only way to advance. It did not make them Nazis in the true sense, although it did make them guilty by association. In the 1950s, and especially the 1960s (after The Wall), thousands joined the Communist Party in the GDR because, again, it was the only way to advance. It did not make them communists in the true sense, although it did make them guilty by association – if you believe the Party was something bad. Separating the believers from the fellow-travellers was never going to be easy, in 1945 or 1989. In 1945, and subsequently, the GDR was extremely thorough in prosecuting (and banishing) members of the Nazi Party. The West was more lenient (and arguably pragmatic) – and echoes of that were heard in Iraq when Saddam Hussein was deposed and the Iraqi army disbanded, leaving – literally – a terrible vacuum.

4. A Korean Air Lines Jumbo jet was shot down by a MiG fighter in September 1983 after it strayed into Soviet airspace over Sakhalin Island. All 269 passengers and crew died and the incident produced a worldwide storm of protest. The Soviet government claimed the plane had been deliberately flown into Soviet airspace at the behest of the Americans to test Soviet response capabilities.

7. This was more than strength in numbers. Nobody knew if the opening of The Wall would be permanent, last just this one night or be rescinded immediately, marooning any GDR citizen who happened to be in the West. They might be refused readmission or be readmitted into the embrace of the Stasi. At least if a family went they’d be marooned together, not separated.

9. Success in terms of beating the shortages, the queues and the lack of goods by finding something desirable – and getting it.
