CHAPTER

EIGHTEEN

William Wesker was the last member of a powerful California clan with roots that stretched as far back as the Gold Rush of 1849. The Weskers still commanded a lot of respect among the West Coast Old Money and there wasn’t much about the family that set them apart from the Gettys or the Hearsts. In fact, the only really interesting thing about Wesker was his status as a movie producer, something that didn’t raise a lot of eyebrows to normal people but was scandalous among the idle rich. Hollywood was an unseemly place for a family that had four former US Senators in their gene pool.

Then William Wesker met Gwendoline Greer, and, and that set everyone’s tongues wagging.

Wesker had already been married twice before Gwendoline, once to his high school sweetheart in a quickie marriage that lasted a year, then again to a French model. That marriage ended with three kids and a very amicable non-threatening divorce. It was one of those “I love you but I don’t want to fuck you anymore” kind of divorces, the kind of thing that only bored white people could really manage to pull off effectively. The kids weren’t in the picture much and preferred their mother’s home in New York.

This left dear old William all by himself on the coast. A handsome, single billionaire alone in Los Angeles was like ringing a dinner bell for wolves and the biggest, meanest, hungriest wolf in the pack during the early 2000s was Gwendoline Greer.

She’d earned herself a reputation as a manhunter and rumors about the two lovers spread throughout the summer of ‘06 until they were confirmed when she waived a giant rock under everyone’s noses at the 2007 Oscars. Los Angeles high society had a conniption when Wesker and Greer married and they were the only thing gossip columns talked about for years.

But these were all publicly available facts, things from society columns and gossip sites. None of this was useful information, and he knew that the only way to get that kind of detail was to drive out and meet William Wesker. The drive up the coast took most of that morning but it wasn’t an entirely unpleasant experience.

The city of San Luis Obispo, California is objectively beautiful. There’s no other way to put it. Sweeping green vistas, rolling hills, and gorgeous coastal cliffs overlook a sunlit Pacific that’s deep blue for a thousand miles in all directions. But somehow in a location that’s spoiled for natural beauty, William Wesker managed to find the most gorgeous spot possible to put his house.

The Wesker house stood on a cliff that overlooked a sandy beach. As you approach from the roadside, you could see a long set of stairs cut into the cliff that would take the owner of the beach down to the ocean where a natural inlet masked the water from the road. The house itself was a vast, sprawling edifice of stone and glass and stained geometric shapes that reflected the light.
