Sunlight touched Pierce’s eyelids, forcing them open. He yawned and started to stretch before he realized a change of position might awaken Nia. He lay on his back, with her cuddled close to left side, his arm wrapped around her. Tucking his free hand behind his head, he contented himself with memories of their night together. They’d made love in various positions all over the bedroom before exhaustion finally claimed them and forced them to seek rest.

He recalled what she’d said to him about not wanting attachments, and how he’d agreed. But now, as he lay here with her in his arms, he realized he may have been hasty in his assumption that he could abide by her terms.

Last night, all I wanted was this. Now, I’m not so sure this will be enough.

She stirred then, murmuring as she came awake. “Good morning.”

“Morning.” He placed a soft kiss on her cheek.

Her eyes opened, and she looked at him. “Do you have plans today? I don’t want to hold you up.”

“I planned to see my barber and take care of a few errands. Nothing major.”

She eased away from him and sat up. Stretching her arms above her head, she said, “Up and at ’em, then.”

Already missing the warmth of her nearness, he watched as she left the bed and padded to the bathroom. The sunlight illuminated her curvaceous nudity, making her appear like a goddess to his hungry eyes. Waking up to such beauty and softness felt like a gift, one he wouldn’t be opposed to opening every day of the rest of his life.

He cringed at that thought.

Yikes. This is taking on a life of its own... And if I want to keep some kind of control over this situation, I’d better get it together.
