benefit of village gawpers, they waved flags, offered marksmanship demonstrations, executed double-time drills, talked up the thrills of army life. These displays proved wonderfully effective, inspiring many restless young African men to join the colors. A similar drive, aimed at those German planters who had not yet stepped forward to defend the Fatherland, raised several more Schutzenkompanies. These, stationed at Lindi, Bismarckburg, Mwanza, Langenberg, and elsewhere, acted as a sort of home guard for those regions of the interior farthest from the British border, though—as always—they could be sent wherever needed at short notice.
All this effort on von Lettow’s part had a salutary effect on the Schutztruppe. By year’s end the army would reach its maximum strength at more than 10,000 officers and men.
