Included in his large entourage were hundreds of servants, thousands of soldiers and eighty camels bearing twenty-four thousand pounds of gold (most of which he gave away to strangers).

For a quarter of a century Mali flourished under the guidance of Mansa Musa. His contact with the East was of mutual benefit. His splendid sense of organization that brought about an accord in the region was well in advance of political developments in Europe, which, during the same period, was still several decades from developing its nation states.
