Chapter Five

IT HADN’T BEEN TERRIBLY taxing to convince her sisters to leave the inn and entrust themselves to the care of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, and indeed, they still seemed to be recovering from the shock of it all. With their circumstances temporarily improving, Lizzy had left the box of treats for the women at the inn, helped her sisters pack their things, and they had met Mr. Darcy in the hallway.

Now, they followed him into Darcy House, which was as grand and opulent as Lizzy would have expected. Understated elegance surrounded her rather than a blatant display of wealth. It was precisely the type of home she would have loved to have, and she reminded herself with forced cheer that perhaps within a year or two, she could afford such accommodations, or at least similar but smaller lodgings for herself and her sisters.

A pang went through her at the thought, because she realized she wouldn’t likely be living with her sisters. She would have to be in an apartment kept by the man whom she chose as her protector while her sisters would be living an unsullied life elsewhere. Still, she would be part of their lives on a regular basis unless the need to completely detach from them presented itself. They had already weathered enough with Lydia’s rash actions that they didn’t need to have their reputations further tainted by a sister who was a courtesan.

“Welcome to Darcy House, Misses Bennets.” Mr. Darcy paused to take off his top hat and outer jacket, handing it to his butler before turning to the women. “Please sit in the parlor, and I shall have the housekeeper bring tea and prepare rooms.”

Lizzy went into the room he indicated, sitting down as she waited for the housekeeper or Mr. Darcy’s return. Kitty and Jane still seem slightly in shock, so she was spared questions, at least for the moment, as a young maid brought in a tray of tea for them a few minutes later. She curtsied and left quickly after pouring, and though Lizzy didn’t want yet another cup of tea, she accepted one and held it in her hand.

She felt like fidgeting, she was so nervous. It was ridiculous to feel this way. After all, Mr. Darcy was doing her a favor in a way. She didn’t doubt there would be some attraction between them, because it seemed to have lingered, and her position toward him had definitely softened over the last three years since receiving his letter, but she was uncertain how much had changed for Mr. Darcy.

Where he had once reluctantly loved her, he had no doubt cured himself of that affliction by now, though he must surely care to some degree to involve himself in the matter. She supposed it wasn’t any great sacrifice for a gentleman to teach a lady how to be a courtesan though. He was sure to get much pleasure from it in the process of instructing her how to please a man, and Lizzy knew she was passably attractive.
