Chapter Fourteen
Jamie was going mad. He hadnât seen Eleanor for two long days. Bates, Stimpson, and his mother were conspiring to keep him in bed, and Eleanor had not visited the sickroom once. His mother assured him that Eleanor was all right, but busy with other matters. Jamie feared what those other matters might be. Suppose she was planning to flee the house. Would anyone else stop her?
He was feeling much better, and he was determined to get up and search the house until he found her. His mother had explained how he had been discovered with Eleanor in his bed. Jamie told her the truth that he asked for comfort in his delirium and Eleanor had complied, but nothing untoward had occurred. The Duchess agreed, but both knew the consequences of the incident.
In truth, Jamie was perfectly fine with those results. Marriage to Eleanor was what he wanted, and he was not especially bothered by the circumstances if he accomplished his goal. But he thought that Eleanor would be upset after her voiced anxieties about him being compromised into marriage and each hour that passed without her appearance only solidified Jamieâs own worries about her state of mind.
The minute Bates had passed out of the room with the remains of his breakfast tray, Jamie was out of his bed. He held onto the bedpost until a momentary wooziness passed, then proceeded to his wardrobe and quickly dressed. He wasnât feeling quite as steady as he imagined, but he was determined to find Eleanor and speak to her.
Jamie couldnât do much about the fine reddish stubble that covered his cheeks. Bates was supposed to return with hot water to shave him, but if Jamie waited, he would be put back in bed and lose his chance to escape. He managed to clean his teeth and give his face a quick scrubbing, then ran his fingers through his hair to arrange it into some type of order. Jamie certainly didnât look his usual self, but it would have to do for the time being. It was more important that his find his wife-to-be and reassure her that he would do the right thing by her.
He peeked out into the hallway outside his bedroom suite to find it empty. Eleanor would not be in her own room at this hour. He had discovered that she was an early riser. Jamie was also sure that she would not have gone riding. While she had found a latent fondness for the exercise, Eleanor was not confident enough to ride without him at her sideâ at least, he hoped so.
His mother would not be up yet so Eleanor would not be with her. The Duchess preferred to rise later and take a breakfast tray in her room. Once she rose and dressed, though, she would be checking on his progress, and she would raise the alarm if Bates hadnât already discovered Jamie out of bed and peached on him. They were treating him like a six-year-old boy, Jamie thought with a snort.
