A.J.

She’d been crying.

I could tell by how red her eyes were when she climbed out of her car, the fact that we had both pulled into the parking garage at the same time purely a coincidence. And while I would’ve been quick to tease her about being the one who was stalking me instead of the other way around like she insisted back at church the other day, her little sniffles had me holding off on the jokes so that I could ask, “Everything alright, Eve?”

Glancing my way, she did her best to straighten up as she said, “I’m fine. Everything’s fine.”

I knew better than to take her word for it since the truth was right in my face, but I also didn’t want to push the button that would set her off, pushing the elevator button for our floor instead when I asked, “You sure? Wanna talk about it?”

Without looking my way, she quietly answered, “I don’t. But thanks for asking.” Then she rushed off the elevator the second it binged for our floor, her keys already in her hand making the entry into her apartment quick so she wouldn’t have to say any more to me about it.

Again, I didn’t want to push. But I also didn’t like seeing her so out of sorts, giving me an idea as, instead of heading into my own apartment, I made my way back to the elevator while shooting Cameron a text.
