Scott looked at one of the last of my countless redrafts and told me everything was spotless, except that I would have a hard time convincing any employer that I was a professional snowboarder, as I boldly pointed out on my résumé at the bottom under “activities.” While I was a professional in my own mind, he assured me that I would need to be sponsored or at least have a few medals in my possession to back my claim. I assured my cousin I would remove that element before any distributions were in order, but that I really was “awesome” at snowboarding.
My first interview was at Smith Barney for the financial consulting trainee program. Essentially, this was a fancy name for a stock broker trainee program. I made it through the first interview and was invited back for a second. Luckily, a family friend, a gracious man by the name of Mark Smith, was a financial advisor for the company I really wanted to work for, Morgan Stanley, and he was marvelous in his endeavor to secure me an interview with Morgan Stanley Investment Management. A job with MS Investment Management held a few key points of significance for me. For one, I would not have to interrupt families during dinner with the latest in securities offerings (though looking back, it wouldn’t have been so bad), and two, I would be able to work with mutual funds, which I felt would be a good segue into the hedge fund industry in due time.
I went through the first stage of interviewing with a lovely young woman by the name of Jennifer Wolfe. My brain was working well and I answered all the questions with ease, despite the fact that I showed up on the wrong date and time. Jennifer was in contact with the team at the Harbor Side Financial Center in Jersey City to schedule the next round of interviews. Carlo Aprea, vice president and desk manager of the internal sales consultants, greeted me warmly as I emerged from the elevator and onto the third floor of Plaza 2. He escorted me to the room where I was to interview and ultimately present a sales pitch on the topic of my choosing.
We sat face to face, and Carlo asked me in an amused manner, “So, professional snowboarder, huh?”
I belted out a chain of curses a mile long inside my head while outwardly maintaining my composure with a slight chuckle, while politely informing him that he must have been given an outdated resume. I reached inside my black leather folder and handed him my most recent copy since Scott’s latest array of constructive criticism. Imagine my relief when Carlo transitioned into his own miniature monologue as he told me about the new Burton snowboard he had just received for Christmas and the house he rents with a few of his friends in Vermont. It’s funny how things tend to work out favorably based on some of the most random of circumstances.
