Taking Charge of Your
Child’s Health
The second you became a parent, your instincts kicked in and made you more suited to the role of caring for someone else. A diagnosis of ADD/ADHD can put a parent into red-alert mode. You find yourself wondering if your child is going to have this problem forever, whether he or she will be socially impaired, academically challenged, and unsuccessful in later life. You may actually become frightened that you’re somehow not going to be able to protect your child or provide enough help for your child.
ADD/ADHD is trickier than most illnesses. You can spend hours explaining how your child behaves at home to a doctor, and he or she still might not truly understand the magnitude of the problem. Therefore your pediatrician might not be able to make recommendations about how you and your family can cope with your child’s behavior problems without drugs. Most doctors are probably listening for key words and phrases—“trouble paying attention,” “impulsive,” or “hyperactive,” for example—to help make a formal diagnosis; then they’re more likely to
“go by the book” and prescribe the pills designated for the disorder.
Your doctor may know your child well, but talking to you for thirty to forty minutes and then labeling your child as having ADD/ADHD
isn’t great medicine. The truth is, no one else is going to take full 131
