The Stick Route attacks both Man and Zone Coverage. The Stick differs from the Hitch by breaking out while the Hitch breaks in. Because of the break, the Stick Route is run off 3 vertical steps + 3 foot-fire steps. The ball must hit at 5 yards on a line.

The quarterback must confirm if the Stick Route is CAPPED or UNCAPPED. If there is no defender threat or the angle of the defender’s hips are away from the break point, then the route is UNCAPPED. The coverage, hip angle, and closure ability of the inside defender most also be considered when confirming the CAP of the Stick Route. A middle linebacker who excels in these areas can undercut the Stick Route and CAP it.

The Stick concept is commonly associated with 3 x 1 formations. (FIG. 99)
