Another group portrait taken on the steps at Ghistelles has Jasta commander Ernst Wendler at front centre (hands on his knees), seated on the knee of Günther Schuster at right. The man to the left of Wendler, hand on hip, is Gustav Schniedewind. Then up the steps in ascending order are Alfred Träger, Adolf Werner, Ehlers, Erich Zschunke, Walter Brachwitz, Julius Buckler, Otto Fitzner, Jakob Wolff, Wilhelm Becker and Georg Strasser (J Young)

The first adversary to fall to Jasta 17 on this new front was another of the vaunted Camels. Early in the morning of 14 September, a flight of Sopwiths from No 70 Sqn was on an offensive patrol to Houthoulst and Roulers. 2Lt E S C Sen, an Indian in the RFC, was flying Camel B2333 when he began to fall behind the rest of his flight with a troublesome engine. Having become separated and disoriented in thick clouds, 2Lt Sen was attacked by four Albatros fighters from Staffel 17. At 0750 hrs Vzfw Gustav Schniedewind shot up the Sopwith, which went down losing fuel until it crashed near Menin. 2Lt Sen was lucky to survive as a PoW, and Schniedewind had chalked up his second Luftsieg.

16 September was a cloudy day with occasional sunny intervals. Once again the RFC was out in force, resulting in Jasta 17 incurring further losses. An early evening patrol, led by the Staffelführer Ernst Wendler, attacked the SE 5as of ‘A’ Flight of No 60 Sqn over Houthem. The scrap was seen by No 56 Sqn’s ‘B’ Flight, led by McCudden, who wrote that he and his men ‘dived and attacked the Huns from the rear’.
