Chapter 8

I had no idea how I had managed to cloak Jasper. Most of the time, when I managed to use my power, it was by accident, in a tense situation. When I didn’t think about it. Was it always going to be like that? Was I only ever going to find out what I was capable of when I was put in a difficult situation? How was I going to learn what power I had if I wasn’t constantly in danger?

It seemed to me that if I didn’t put myself out there, if I wasn’t in a tight predicament, I wouldn’t find out what I was capable of.

On the one hand, it was great to know that my magic always had my back when things got tough. That way, I knew that whenever something went wrong, I would be able to take care of myself.

On the other hand, it means that unless I was in danger, I wouldn’t be able to know what I could do. And that seemed backward. It was important to me to know what I could do, so that I could practice it, so that I could know what power I had at my disposal.

I was in my room when Priscilla knocked on the door and pushed it open.

“I heard that you did something spectacular today,” Priscilla said.

“You did?” I asked.

Priscilla nodded and walked to my bed, perching on the age. “The guys are going on about it, I heard Jasper telling Enrique and Theo.”

I shook my head. “He shouldn’t sing my praises. I have no idea how I did it, or if I would be able to do it again.”

“Give yourself a little more credit,” Priscilla said. “You are a lot better than you think you are.”

I nodded and groaned. “Everyone keeps telling me that. But that doesn’t make me feel comfortable with what I can do. I don’t know what I am capable of and it seems like I won’t be able to find out unless it’s necessary that I do it. When I am in the gym with Dracus, I can never unlock any of my power.”

“Just give it time, Fiona,” Priscilla said.

“You sound just like Dracus,” I pointed out.

Priscilla grinned. “I take that as a compliment.”

Priscilla looked up to Dracus. He was her prince, after all. And Priscilla revered the royalty as she should. I knew Dracus in a different way – we were equals. Not that I saw him any differently; he was a great guy. But sometimes, it was frustrating. Dracus expected things of me that I wasn’t sure I would be able to do. No matter how hard I tried. The fact that I ended up doing them in the field – or doing something completely different that worked just as well – was beside the point. I wanted to be able to unlock my power when I needed it. I wanted to be able to do it on command.

“Did Jasper say anything else to the guys?” I asked.
