Chapter 7

When we returned to the Manor, I was on an adrenaline high. I wasn’t sure what it was – if my power surge had put me on a high or if it was because my ankle was finally healed – but I was pumped and so excited.

“Calm down, Fiona,” Jasper muttered when we climbed the stairs to my room. “If you carry on like this, you’re going to wake up the whole house.”

“Everyone is out on missions,” I pointed out. “And how can you expect me to be calm? You felt it. And you said it yourself – that was my power. No one else’s. And not the amulet’s power, either. Do you know what that means? Do you understand?”

Jasper chuckled.

“Clearly, I don’t.”

I groaned, rolling my eyes. “If you have any idea how hard I tried to get that power to show itself, if you have any idea how difficult it’s been… And the healing thing? Finally! I have been trying so hard for so long.”

Jasper frowned. “Are you saying that you knew you could heal like that?”

I nodded. “I healed myself, here,” I said, holding up my arm and pointing to the perfectly smooth skin. “I did it when I was with Theo.”

“Theo didn’t say anything about that,” Jasper said.

For some reason, the idea that Theo had kept my secret made me feel a rush of warmth towards the Bear Shifter. I was sure that the boys discussed everything with each other. In this place, there were no secrets. Except, of course, the secrets they all kept from me.

But right now, I had more things on my mind.

“If I can wear that amulet, if it can activate my power, then I won’t be so pathetic anymore,” I said.

Jasper frowned. “Fiona, you’re not pathetic. Where did you get that idea?”

“Well, I am never able to use my magic when I need it. It just makes me like the rest of the humans, but in the shifter world, that puts me in danger. Then the rest of you needed to keep protecting me. I’m sick of it.”

Jasper shook his head. “It’s not like that,” he said. “We all know that you just need to develop your power. We all know that it’s a matter of time, nothing else. I don’t think you should wear the amulet, it’s dangerous. Look at what happened tonight – I’m pretty sure that you affected shifters within a two-mile radius around you with how strong the magic was.”

The idea of being that strong made me giddy, even though Jasper probably wanted me to feel cautious about it. I just couldn’t find it in myself to see it as a problem when I had been waiting for this to happen for so long.

“Come on, Jasper,” I said. “The amulet called out to me, technically. You can’t keep it away from me.”

“I think I should,” Jasper said. “If you can’t control it, who knows what could happen?”

“Who says I can’t control it?”

“You just went from not being able to access it at all, to the power being so strong that neither of us knew what to do with it.
