Chapter 7

At noon on Friday, I danced around my room to make sure I hadn’t forgotten anything in my small suitcase for my weekend trip. I made sure to pack the book Priscilla lent me so I could read it.

Luckily, my afternoon classes were cancelled due to construction to repair the basement dungeons. The seniors were in an absolute uproar after all of them had been enlisted into the cleanup. The Dean was on a rampage, but nobody wanted to snitch. As I understood it, Dracus and Enrique were officially excused, of course, they were! I bet Enrique had been at that party!

No matter, I reminded myself. I had a fantastic getaway to plan for. Dracus agreed to teleport me to Haberstown where I would spend my weekend in the woods.

When I arrived at his office, he was finishing a neat index card full of emergency contacts. I nearly rolled my eyes. Truly, Dracus was the father of all Council members. He ignored my exasperated look and handed the card to me with an elegant flick of his wrist.

“I’ve included Moony’s phone number on this card. The cabin has a phone line. The other numbers are my landline, your lovely bodyguard’s landline, and an emergency number.”

I glanced around his room. “You have a phone in here? Don’t you talk through magic mirrors or something?”

He gave me a humoring smirk. “I can see the use in phones. I’m not a complete traditionalist. Moony has invited you for dinner. I’m sure you’ll want to accept.”

I couldn’t help but instinctively clap my hands together. “I can’t wait!” Along with my backpack and suitcase, I was ready to go. I failed to suppress my grin, and Dracus seemed amused by my cheerful demeanor.

“Don’t act too sad to leave us,” he muttered with a playful shake of his head. His calm composure came back as he offered his hand. “Are you ready to teleport? I’ll send you through, but you’ll have to go into the village yourself. Moony will show you to your cabin if you want to eat dinner with his family.”

“Definitely,” I insisted. I grabbed Dracus’ hand, feeling odd to hold him like this. His touch was warm and comforting.

“Be back by Sunday night to the teleportation point,” he said in a voice much gentler than I was expecting. When he sent me through the whirling colors, it almost felt as if he was sad to let go. I found myself not bothered much by the trip, only by the sudden absence of warmth in my grasp. I stared at my hand as I appeared in front of a mighty oak tree by the gate of Haberstown. I never thought of Dracus as a comfort, but suddenly when I looked at my empty hand, I felt a deep sense of longing inside my chest.

“Fiona!” a familiar voice called. I turned to see Moony waving excitedly at me. “I’m here to ferry you to dinner.”

“I feel bad,” I told him as I came up.
