In my room, I spend hours

thumbing through each and every page,

drawing circles with my pen,

bending page corners down to remember:

mattresses,

bed frames,

bookshelves,

and desks.

Mom comes home to find me,

overjoyed and hopeful, looking forward to an apartment with furniture

not found behind a dumpster or purchased second-hand from yard sales or pawn shops.

My excitement grates her,

until she is shrieking, “Who does she think she is?!”

“Abuela just wants to help us.”

“No, she’s deceitful and manipulative!”

“How is she trying to deceive us? Manipulate us into what?”

“You think she’s such an angel. She’s not!”

“She is! You’re just jealous.”
