Abraham Lincoln in 1848. This early photograph shows a young, upwardly mobile professional lawyer and politician—two of the most lily-white professions of Lincoln’s age. (Courtesy of the Library of Congress)

“Mike Fink,” by William Gropper, no date. The legendary flatboatman of the Mississippi River was famous for his feats of daring, strength, and marksmanship, including a racist tale of his having shot off an African American’s protruding heel. Fink was a cultural icon of the predominantly white flatboating culture during Lincoln’s boyhood trips down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. (Courtesy of the Library of Congress)
