Chapter Eleven

I had just walked into my apartment that morning and locked the door when Nia called.

“Good morning, beautiful lady.”

“Good morning, Omari. Wide awake for a change, I see.”

“Yes. But to be honest, I worked again last night, so I’m just getting in. What about you? Did you sleep well?”

“I did. But I just wanted to say good morning and hear your voice before I went to work.”

“What do you want to do tonight?”

“I tell you what, why don’t I cook dinner for us tonight?”

“You can cook?”

“Yes. And trust me, I’m really good at it.”

“Okay—since you’re all that in the kitchen, you’re on. Do you need me to bring anything?”

“Just your handsome face.”

“I usually try to keep that with me.”

“Bye, Omari,” Nia said, and this time I was sure that I heard her lips smack with a kiss. “Talk to you later.”

“Have a great day, Nia.”

“Of course, I will. I love working like a slave all day. It’s great!” she said like Tony the Tiger and giggled before saying, “Bye, Omari,” and hung up the phone.

After a long hot shower, I got in bed and slept until afternoon. When I got up, I grabbed something quick to eat, and then I went to see Ashanique, to give her the data that Zoey downloaded from The Dawson Executive Management Group’s servers.

Since we were gonna be partners, I had thought about having Zoey meet me there. As bold as she used to be—walking up in high-end stores, taking whatever she wanted—Ashanique was a little too scary for that. I couldn’t blame her for that; new faces are scary. Once I assured her that Zoey was cool, I would arrange a meeting. Still, I waited until after she got excited about the data that I had just presented to her before I mentioned that it came from our new partner.

“If she can deliver like this, she is a welcome addition to the team. When do I get to meet her?” Ashanique asked, and after I told her that I would arrange a meeting, she wanted to know what Zoey looked like.

“She looks like … like … she looks like a woman,” I said laughing, as I got up and headed for the door.

Now that I had Ashanique squared away, I drove by Axe’s apartment. It had been a couple of days, so I wanted to let him know where I was with finding Pope, and what I had been doing with Zoey.

“I don’t know much about her. But if she’s down with Faulkner, I know he checked her out.”

“That’s what I thought, and so far”—I nodded my head— “she’s been the truth.”

“But what bothers me is them bearer bonds. That ain’t the kind of shit you’d expect a private wealth manager to have laying around in his safe.”

“Zoey says they’re used for money laundering, tax evasion and shit.”

“Yeah. So, you need to watch your back.” Axe stood up. “I got something for you. I’ll be right back.”

When he came back, Axe was carrying a Ruger Mini 14 and a case to put it in.
