LUKE DISMOUNTED AFTER he reined in at his home. His dog raced over to him to receive a pat. “You’re keeping watch over the ranch, I hope.” He smiled, walked inside, and quickly pulled out his rifle before taking the horse to the barn. Although his barn was small, it had four stalls including the one where he led the horse. He removed the saddle and blanket from his horse then rubbed him down as his dog sat beside to him. As Luke brushed his horse, he hoped there wouldn’t be any trouble. He should have held his temper better; but once the brothers proceeded to speak poorly about Abigail, he wasn’t able to stop himself from wiping the smile off Owen’s face.

He moved out of the horse’s stall and checked on his milk cow, assuring himself she was fine, before heading outside to confirm his cattle were headed toward the barn where he had built a shelter for them to get out of the elements. He grabbed the feedbag and filled their trough. Using a hand pump he installed at the barn, he filled the trough in the corral with water.

Luke jumped the fence when the bull charged with a snarl.

“Whoa, Sampson. You’re gonna kill the hand that feeds you one day.”

The bull snorted in response and Luke knew better than to challenge him. Despite his unpredictability, he would make a great stud, and that’s why he planned to keep him instead of herding him to market. He hoped things would calm down before he’d have to go on a cattle drive; and, by then he’d be closer to convincing Abigail he was a man to trust. He hadn’t made the best impression on her today when he fought with the brothers, of that he was sure.

His dog—who he’d named Dog—followed him inside. It wasn’t the most creative of names, but he just couldn’t figure out a good name for him. Luke had found him being kicked by a man leaving a saloon and he interceded before the poor pup was hurt. And Dog had been with him ever since. He needed him more now than ever. He’d let Luke know if anyone was lurking outside, which is where he slept. Luke made a rocking chair a few months ago and Dog managed to curl up on the chair at night. He was never too far away.

Luke sat down at his table, pulled a piece of wood out to whittle, and placed his rifle right next to him. He picked up a knife and worked the blade into the soft wood, making small cuts until small shavings were piled on the table. He planned to make a figurine of a horse for Abigail. He wasn’t sure if she’d like it or not, but it took his mind off his troubles. It was desolate and silent at his ranch save for the crickets and the snorts of the cattle in the distance. It was time for him to find a wife; but until he met, Abigail, he never thought it might be a reality for him.
