Just remember, with good password-cracking software — available for free from the web, of course —it takes only about a minute for a hacker to crack your password and potentially access any data they want to.

With any password, you should follow these common sense rules to protect your privacy:

Don’t give your password to anyone — it’s like giving away the keys to the front door of your house.

If you even suspect that someone has your password, immediately change it.

Change your password every few months just to be on the safe side. Maybe even rotate a group of passwords over the various accounts you use. For a truly strong password, tie four random words together like “Davescatsniffsglue” and use some substitute characters, such as “Dav3sc@tsn1ff5glu3”. Also, use as many characters as you can. Windows 8, for example, allows a password up to 16 characters long. Use the maximum number of characters allowed.
