Mercifully, he was able to drift off soundly and felt himself drooling onto his pillow mere seconds before sleep took him away. He was so exhausted, that he was able to put aside all thoughts that might have kept him awake, and he embraced slumber wholeheartedly.

The problem was that he awoke only an hour later, the clock on his bedside table reading: 3:30AM. He closed his eyes again and tried to catch hold of sleep’s tail before it got away from him, but it was too late. Sleep would have to be earned all over again.

His mouth was dry and he felt the room spinning. Getting high all evening suddenly seemed like less of a good idea and he wondered how he always forgot how rotten the aftermath was. He usually made the pledge never to do it again, but he knew it would be broken the next time he ran into Gaz.

With a groan, Noddy reached over and grabbed the glass of days-old water that lived on his bedside table and took a sip, spilling half a mouthful down his chin. Then he flopped his head back down on the pillow and squeezed his eyes shut. He had to take deep breaths to keep the sickness away.

He was so stoned. The bed felt like it was bobbing up and down beneath him, and he was freezing. He kept taking deep breaths, trying to keep the rising nausea at bay, but the bed would not stop bucking beneath him. Each tiny movement made his gorge rise a little further. The battle against puking was quickly being lost.

He put a hand over his mouth and sat up suddenly, terrified that he was going to puke all over himself.

The mattress was a bucking bronco, making him heave.

The little girl giggled at him.

She was bouncing on the foot of the mattress, a young child playing excitedly. Despite the darkness, her white eyes lit up the gloom around her and her mouth hung wide open as delirious laughter spilled out.

Noddy choked on his own vomit. Instinctively he had gone to scream, but his heart swelled up and lodged in his throat. His bladder twitched, threatening to release, and he had to grip his crotch to keep from having an accident.

The little girl clapped her hands excitedly.

Noddy managed to get the controls to his body back, and placed a hand on the edge of the bed, ready to leap out. It shouldn’t have been wet, so he looked down and saw that his fingers had squelched into something moist.

There was a dead cat in his bed.

Noddy finally screamed.

As he flung himself out of bed, his foot tangled in the duvet and he went sprawling into his bedside cabinet. The half-full pint of water dropped on top of him and soaked his underwear. The cold shock made his scream even louder, and several times shriller.

“Help! Please, don’t hurt me!”

Light engulfed the room, making him shield his eyes. The little girl was going to get him—he could feel her coming near.
