Chapter Nine

Cher couldn’t wait to get away from him, and his prying questions. Why she brought him here was beyond her. Just what was she trying to prove? She practically shoved him out the door. She signed out, and Bainbridge noted the time. She waited impatiently for the elevator to arrive. Every nerve in her body screamed with tension. She had to get rid of Luc.

When the elevator came, she punched the floor for her office and the main floor. When the door opened on the lobby, she waited for Luc to leave.

“Luc, I have some phone calls to make.”

He remained in the elevator. “Does it involve the case?”

“Maybe, but I can’t have you breathing down my neck. Now, go away.”

He lifted his chin defiantly. “Make me.”

“Stop acting like a child. I can throw you in a choke hold.”

His eyes narrowed. “You just want me out of your hair.”

“I want you out of my life.” The words slipped out before she could stop them.

“Then solve my case, and I’ll be more than happy to get out of your life.”

“You can start be getting out of the elevator.” The desk sergeant was watching them curiously. “Don’t make me do my best police brutality routine on you. I need time to think things through. I can’t do that with you breathing down my back.”

“Then let me take you to dinner tonight.”

“I don’t know where this little piece of information is going to take me. I don’t want to make plans. I never know where inspiration is going to come from. I’ll call you if I have some breakthrough thought that you need to know.”

She could see the reluctance on his face, but she wasn’t going to back down. “Running down information is pretty boring.”

“I can stand boring.”

“No, you can’t. You’ll be bugging me every five minutes and I won’t be able to string two thoughts together. Go home, I’ll call you if I have any inspiration. I promise.”

He started to step out of the elevator, then he stopped and reached into his pocket. He handed her a card. “In case you need it, this is my new phone number and address. Cell phone at the bottom.”

She frowned at the card. “You managed to have all your utilities up and running already?”

“I even have cable and all the streaming services.”

“I’m impressed.”

“You could come see.” His face took on a hopeful look. “I believe I even have ESPN.”

“Cable is not a luxury item. I have it myself. Go home.”

He stepped back, and the elevator doors closed. Cher stared at the card. Nice neighborhood. There was nothing second class about Luc Broussard.

Cher pocketed the card. The elevator doors opened, she stepped out, and entered her office to find it completely empty. Not even her assistant was at his post. He’d left a note tacked to her door saying he was out and would return in an hour.

Whitaker’s desk was a mess with folders piled high in such a haphazard manner Cher was certain one good breeze from an open window would topple it.
