CHAPTER FOURTEEN

~OGMA~

I HAD DRAMATICALLY overestimated my ability for survival. My life in Didcot seemed incredibly cushy to how I was trying to live now. I’d managed to leave the city and find a forest not too far away from it, but there were still traces everywhere of its proximity to humans. Every now and then people would wander through, and I’d have to hide to avoid scaring them and having them attack me or something.

What’s more, I sucked at finding food. I had never been a hunter. Omegas never hunted at home. There wasn’t much wildlife in this forest, anyway, thanks to all the humans. What little food I could find—berries, mushrooms, and so on—was just enough to keep me going. But after I ended up getting sick from a bad mushroom, I knew I couldn’t stay here.

Other forests might be better. There would be more to hunt. But the closer I got to Didcot, the higher the danger of being found by one of the wolves was. There were other cities, of course, but I had no idea how to get to them, and what if they were different to Ivybridge? It had taken me long enough to adapt to living there.

I had to face the facts. I couldn’t survive on my own.

I had been in the forest for a few days now, and I was starving. It was night, and there were no humans around at this time, so I loped to the edge of the forest and watched the city. The bright lights of Ivybridge twinkled in the distance. I hadn’t even gone that far from Theo’s house. I wondered what he was up to. He might’ve already forgotten about me.

He said he cared for me, but who could care for a tainted omega? It was probably a relief to not have someone taking up space in such a small apartment. Words were one thing, but they couldn’t protect you from the truth. Randulf might’ve said he’d never leave me, but then he was left with no choice, and I was exiled.

I cautiously started pacing towards the city. I’d just poke around. I could probably scavenge some food from bins. It was undignified, but that didn’t matter. People would probably just think I was a fox or something.

Once I got back onto the streets my nose hungrily searched for any scent of leftover food it could find. I dipped into some alleys and poked around, but a lot of it was rotten, or food that I had never tried and didn’t trust. After the mushrooms my stomach was feeling quite delicate. Finally I stumbled across a pack of unopened meat. I didn’t understand why it had been thrown out. Humans were odd.

I tore through the plastic and gobbled it up, taking large bites and barely chewing. God, that was good. I was filled with a surge of confidence. I could make it in this city, even without an alpha. I wandered further towards the center, sticking to alleys to avoid humans.
