Chapter Fifteen
While I was wishing for my dog and horse to be united, Ring was racing north with his lover, She. They ran a good long ways, playing together. They swam back and forth across the river several times, just for the fun of it, even though he knew it was the wrong direction for him to be going. Every now and then he stopped and threw his head up; something just wasnât right. Instinct told him to head south. But She was waiting impatiently, and he wanted to go with her even though his heart was heavy. She was trotting north. Ring threw back his wolf head and again vented his pain and sorrow to the hunterâs moon.
All across the river bottom the tame animals pressed closer together and shivered in fear of the unknown. Dub, sitting in his window sound asleep, cried quietly and knew it not. Ring sat for a second, sniffed the wind, and raced north after She. All he could smell on the north wind was She. Together they played and traveled north at a leisurely pace, just enjoying being young, free, and happy. The wolf was entirely in charge, and Dub was a long ways off.
They hit a lope up the moonlit river. If at any time Ring stopped, She ran back to lick his face and urge him on north. She taught Ring lots of things that he knew werenât right, but he wanted to please her. They traveled only by night and covered many miles north as the weather steadily turned colder. She was not content with a big rabbit to eat, nor even the occasional beaver or muskrat. The only way Ring could satisfy her was to kill a calf.
After several miles, She turned away from the river. Ring could see that She knew where she was going. In reality, She knew this country like it was her own back yard. She peeled off to one side and made seven or eight miles at a pretty good trot and soon came up to the edge of a good-sized meadow. About forty head of cattle were out in the middle of that field. She crouched down in the grass, Ring did the same, and they watched the cattle for a while. Ring knew something was wrong with this, but he wanted to please his mate. They never moved a muscle for hours until the cows moved into a canebrake thicket to spend the night.
The coming of twilight was the start of Sheâs day, and Ring was fast adapting to that behavior. She made a detour around the meadow and crept up to the edge, with Ring matching her every move. It wasnât long before a calf quit sucking and wandered off twenty or thirty feet from its mama. She started creeping up on the calf as soon as it lay down. Then She made her charge and tried to tear the calfâs throat out, but missed the killing stroke.
Ring took over. He was right behind her and promptly cut both heel strings on the victim.
