“Why didn’t the sun get up this morning?” Little Reindeer asked his mother. “It’s been dark all day long.”

“That’s because it’s winter,” she answered. “We live in a northern land. The days are gloomy and night lasts for a long time.”

“So tell me a story, Mum,” he said. “That will make the night go faster.”

He snuggled up to shelter by his mother’s warm side.

“I’ll tell you the story of Little Reindeer,” she began. “He could run from the moment he was born. Every day he runs across the snow on his wide snowshoe hooves. In winter, when the sun doesn’t bother to get up over the horizon, Little Reindeer scrapes away snow with his hoof and eats the crispy lichen that grows underneath. Sometimes he’s lucky and finds a delicious red and white mushroom, too. When summer comes again, the sun will get up, and Little Reindeer will eat the sweet green grass.”

“That’s my story, isn’t it!” he cried. “I’m looking forward to summer. I don’t like the winter darkness.”

“It won’t last for ever,” murmured his mum. She nuzzled the creamy fur on the top of his head. Little Reindeer’s eyes were so tired from the cold. He closed them, and soon he was fast asleep.

When he woke, he remembered the story. “Mum says I could run from the moment I was born. So here I go!”

Off he ran, across the snow on his wide snowshoe hooves, all through the forest until he reached the top of the hill. He stopped and pawed back the snow with his hoof to find food.
